How Do I Winterize My Pool?

Winterization is the process of preparing a swimming pool for the winter months to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. The steps for pool winterization typically include:

  1. Lowering the water level: The water level in the pool should be lowered to below the skimmer and return jets to prevent damage from freezing water.

  2. Cleaning the pool: The pool should be thoroughly cleaned, including removing any debris from the bottom and skimming the surface.

  3. Balancing the chemicals: The pH, chlorine, and total alkalinity levels of the water should be balanced before closing the pool.

  4. Adding a winterizing chemical: A winterizing chemical, such as a chlorine stabilizer or algaecide, should be added to the water to prevent the growth of bacteria and algae.

  5. Removing and storing pool equipment: The pump, filter, heater, and any other equipment should be removed and stored in a protected area to prevent damage from freezing temperatures.

  6. Covering the pool: A pool cover should be placed over the pool to prevent debris from entering and to keep leaves and other debris out of the pool.

  7. Drain and blow out the plumbing: This step is important to prevent damage from freezing water in the pool's plumbing system.

It's important to note that if you have an automatic pool cover, some steps may change, like not covering the pool. Consult the manufacturer's instructions for proper winterization of your pool equipment. Also, consult a professional pool service if you are not comfortable performing these steps yourself. At OASIS we do not currently offer any routine maintenance services but we do have great recommendations for you!
